More information about Fred Schmitt and Schmitt Investors Ltd.

Fred Schmitt began collecting postal history about 1950. A native of New York City he began visiting the famous Nassau Street in lower Manhattan, then home to some 450 stamp and paper collectible dealers. For a time he worked part time for Frank Mittermier of Mitty Stamp Company at 116 Nassau Street, the heart of the stamp district. Mittermier was a pioneer in the arcane field of postal history and young Fred absorbed much of his knowledge.

Later Fred branched out on his own buying and selling and trading interesting postal history covers and paper items up and down Nassau Street. Meanwhile he was sending covers to expeditions all over the world and reselling them to collectors.

After serving in the U.S. Navy as a Supply Officer, Fred resumed his business on a part time basis. He became a full time dealer in 1986. Fred has been a long time advertiser in a number of collector publications, belongs to a host or clubs and societies related to his fields of endeavor and has written extensively on a number of historical topics. He is a recognized expert in the fields of American manuscripts and worldwide postal history. His personal knowledge is backed by an extensive library of several thousand titles devoted to general history, geography and postal history.
