Fred Schmitt
began collecting postal history about 1950. A native of New York City he
began visiting the famous Nassau Street in lower Manhattan, then home to
some 450 stamp and paper collectible dealers. For a time he worked part
time for Frank Mittermier of Mitty Stamp Company at 116 Nassau Street, the
heart of the stamp district. Mittermier was a pioneer in the arcane field
of postal history and young Fred absorbed much of his knowledge.
Later Fred branched out on his own buying and selling and trading
interesting postal history covers and paper items up and down Nassau
Street. Meanwhile he was sending covers to expeditions all over the world
and reselling them to collectors.
After serving in the U.S. Navy as a Supply Officer, Fred resumed his
business on a part time basis. He became a full time dealer in 1986. Fred
has been a long time advertiser in a number of collector publications,
belongs to a host or clubs and societies related to his fields of endeavor
and has written extensively on a number of historical topics. He is a
recognized expert in the fields of American manuscripts and worldwide
postal history. His personal knowledge is backed by an extensive library
of several thousand titles devoted to general history, geography and
postal history.
